2014 KS2 SATs Reading Test Changes

Posted by in KS2 Info on Jan 04, 2014 . 16 Comments.

In May 2014 the Level 3-5 KS2 Reading Comprehension Test (normally referred to as simply the Reading Test) is changing for the first time since 1998.

Here we’re going to summarise the changes that teachers, parents and pupils need to know.

No More Theme or Reading Time

Since 1998 pupils have been given a themed Reading booklet with 3-4 different texts. They were then given 15 minutes at the beginning of the test as dedicated reading time followed by 45 minutes to answer the questions.

However, for 2014 this is no longer the case. Instead, the texts will not share a common theme and pupils will simply be given 60 minutes to read the texts and work through the questions at their own pace.

Tweaked Structure

Prior to 2014, pupils were given 30-35 questions worth up to 3 marks each and totalling to give a mark out of 50. For 2014 this will be expanded slightly to 35-40 questions but still be marked out of 50.

Further to this, the first text will be the least demanding with the following texts steadily getting more difficult.
