During Year 6, children read more complicated texts including modern and period texts, biographies and short stories as well as longer stories from different cultures. They also deepen their vocabulary and punctuation skills by learning about synonyms and antonyms as well as the correct use of colons, semi-colons, dashes and hyphens.

In maths, children develop their multiplication skills by learning to multiply 2-digit numbers by 4-digit numbers using long multiplication and vice-versa with division and long division. To finish off Key Stage 2 (KS2) children will learn (and be able to solve problems relating to) ratio and proportion, algebra and more complicated, multi-step problems relating to area, perimeter, coordinates and translation of 2D shapes. Broadly speaking, a large part of Year 6 maths is learning to use all the mathematical skills they have learned throughout KS2 and apply them to questions that require a multi-step method and problem-solving approach.

At the end of Year 6, all children must sit KS2 SATs, a set of formal, timed exams in English Reading, Maths and Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPaG). Preparation is vital!

Buy some of our Year 6 workbooks, study books and practice papers to help reinforce your child's learning at home and prepare them for their KS2 SATs.
