Pre-School is generally considered as the academic year before your child attends school. This is when your child is aged between 3 and 4 and when they will often attend a nursery for a number of hours per week.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standard expected of children in pre-school. Assessment is an ongoing process and primarily deals with communication and language as well as physical, social and emotional development.
These areas exist to help stimulate children's interest in learning and building relationships. Supporting these are four further areas: literacy, maths, understanding of the world and expressive arts.

We want them to develop their knowledge of numbers and letters to help then when they start school. Some children may well want to begin learning to read but it's important not to rush this - there's plenty of time for this once they're in school.
