Throughout Reception, children learn basic maths and literacy as well as basic independence like going to the toilet, hanging up their coat and getting changed for P.E.
Reception is a learning journey and by helping your children at home, you can make that journey easier and more fun.
In literacy, children will begin to tackle phonics by learning all the basic letters, phonics combinations and their sounds. They will also be encouraged to try writing the letters and words themselves.
Children will be encouraged to start reading and writing without delay. Parents should read with their children daily and although it may be slow progress, it's worth every minute.
In maths, children will learn to identify all the numbers up to 20, be able to compare them, count up (or down) to them and begin to understand their relevance with money, weights and time.
As well as this children will be expected to identify basic geometric shapes like a circle, square or a triangle.
