Reception is a child's first year of school and although it involves a great of deal of play, there's also learning. Starting school is an enormous change for children.
Children in Reception will begin by learning about numbers and how to carry out basic calculations. Your child may show you a number line, a tool that helps them add, subtract and count. They will also learn to identify 2D and 3D shapes and describe events in a chronological order.
In English or "Literacy", children will learn the alphabet, high frequency words and begin to be taught phonics towards the path of reading. In addition children will begin to write basic letters and practise handwriting.
