Key Stage 1 (or KS1) is a statutory framework for Year 1 and Year 2 children in England. It defines what children need to be taught by their teachers and forms a part of the national curriculum.
In KS1, children begin by continuing to learn their phonics and literacy, climaxing with the tricky Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year 1. Then, at the end of Year 2, children take their KS1 SATs - a set of statutory tests in English Reading, Maths and Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar.
Children also continue to learn and develop their mathematical, reading (including reading comprehension), creative writing, and problem-solving abilities while preparing for these formal assessments.
