At the beginning of Key Stage 1, children start Year 1. Despite having attended a full year in Reception, a class of children will still demonstrate a wide level of ability and knowledge. Teachers work to bring the class up to a fairly even level of ability.
Keep up to date with what your child is studying in class and practise and nurture their new knowledge during everyday tasks.
Children aged between 5 and 7 are notoriously inquisitive, soaking up knowledge like sponges. This learning can easily continue outside of the classroom.
Try using everyday objects to build on the skills they’re already learning at school. For example, try reading road-signs or counting the number of cars you see on the way to school. Find opportunities to practise new skills together, whether it's tweaking a board-game to include money, cooking from recipes or telling the time.
The more kids integrate their classroom learning with having fun, the more they will enjoy it.
