Year 2 is the final year of Key Stage 1 and in May children will take Key Stage 1 SATs tests. Preparing for these tests is important and schools will spend time getting children ready for the real exams.

In Maths children will learn to add and subtract with two-digit and one-digit numbers. They will learn multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Children will also begin to learn about fractions and develop their knowledge of weight, capacity, length and time.

In English children will build on their phonics until they are reading words without having to sound each component out. They will continue to read a range of different stories and be introduced to non-fiction books. Spelling tests will become more complicated and they will continue to develop their writing and handwriting skills. In developing their writing they will be taught how to use capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and question marks.
