Year 4 is the second year of Key Stage 2 and children's knowledge will build on what was learned in previous years.

In Maths your child will learn to add and subtract numbers with up to four digits using column addition and subtraction. They will learn all their times tables up to 12.

Children will also learn to solve problems involving fractions and be introduced to decimals. They will need to find the perimeter and area of shapes, use different units of measurement and convert between the 12-hour and 24-hour clock. Children will do further work with geometry and need to interpret data in bar charts and line graphs.

In English children will increase their familiarity with a wide range of genres of writing including poems and plays. They will be thinking about inference and making predictions about what is going to happen in a story.

When it comes to writing, they should become much more confident this year with joining their handwriting, keeping it as neat as possible. They will need to be aware of the setting, characters and plot in their stories and how to structure a text, including use of paragraphs. In spelling, grammar and punctuation, they will begin to use apostrophes to mark plural possession and become more confident in using speech marks.
