Computer Coding For Kids

Description

Computer Coding For Kids

With computer coding now part of the national curriculum for primary school children, this introduces a brand new challenge for parents. What is coding? What is my child going to do? How can I support their learning?

Computer coding is simply telling a computer how to solve a problem and it can be both fun and extremely rewarding. The trouble is very few children have ever attempted to tackle it themselves. Carol Vorderman's Computer Coding for Kids is a superb book that goes through every topic in a colourful and easy to follow fashion.

The book is highly visual and through the use of numerous example step by step projects, teaches children how to code. It it introduces you child to two computer languages, Scratch and Python, by instructing them step by step through fun, interactive projects. From coding basics to fun projects, this unique guide will show you how to build games and animations.

Supporting the new computing curriculum in UK schools, Computer Coding for Kids makes even the most difficult aspects of coding fun and easy to understand.

* Please note that this book (or pack of books) is fully updated to the new curriculum that began in 2014 (for Years 1-5 and 7-9) and 2015 for Year 6.

My 7 year old son has just started reading this. He's found it really exciting and can not wait to start coding. The language used in the book is simple to understand yet engaging.

Excellent. I like the way it starts with Scratch and moves to Python using screen shots of Scratch coding blocks alongside the Python code. The code is well annotated.

As someone who writes code for a living, I've been trying to find a way to get my 8 year old some kind of exposure to it. My own attempts having fallen flat, this book with its game-based approach and lots of fun ideas and bright colours is perfect. She is hooked (in a good way).

Amazing book. I've only had it for one week and I can program scratch like 123! Really fun way to learn coding. Also gives brilliant referance to stuff like javascript and python which is used by NASA, google AND pixar! A must have.

I really love this book. It is ideal for kids who want to get ahead with programming but is also an excellent resource for teachers who are new to programming but have to get up to speed with it due to changes to the new KS3 curriculum. I have already recommended this to my students and colleagues. It starts very simply and then progresses logically to harder concepts. The beauty of it being the fun way it is presented and kids can very quickly create some great programs. It takes the mystery out of programming and makes it accessible to all. The price was brilliant too. Similar books from conventional Educational establishments cost much more. This must be one of my best buys ever!

Really great book. My son has loved doing some of the things on scratch and has then gone on to tweet things by himself. Good starting point for any child wanting to learn about coding.

A good product, the book teaches scratch and the basics of Python. I would recommend it for beginners.

I bought this book initially for my son (who is 8) who really likes computers and talked about doing computer programming. It is a fantastic book for those starting at the beginning. It's really easy to follow and 'Scratch' the programme they start off with is easy and fun. I have also bought this for a friend's child's birthday and he told my son that it was one of his best presents!

My 10-year-old son uses Scratch a fair bit and wants to get into coding and this is perfect. Focuses on scratch in the first half but then has sections on Python and also explains the basics of coding generally. An excellent introduction.

Brought this for my 10 year old son and he really found it useful. Great for children who are starting out with coding or for those with some knowledge.

Mitsuko(30/05/2015)

This is outstandingly good. Fun scratch projects to try and an introduction to python long with all the basics. A must have.

Brought as an Xmas present for my daughter who's 9 and she loves it! She'd talked about it all the time as they use it at school and she's happy she can now practice (and get ahead) at home. I can't comment on the material inside as I know nothing about computers but apparently it's good for kids.

This is a great book that my daughter really enjoyed working through. The layout is very easy to follow and straightforward to apply. I am not a computer programmer but I know some basic C programming. I was looking for a way to get my daughter interested in programming. You need no prior programming experience to get through this book. My daughter is 7 and she can navigate it in her own. The book showcases programming in a fun and easy to follow way. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get kids interested in programming.

Easy to follow, clear instructions and layout leading to gradually more challenging projects that can be shared, edited and viewed later. My grand-daughter enjoyed it

This is also an OK book for adults who would like to learn some basic ideas about programming - or at least get an overview of what we are teaching in school. It's beautifully put together and is accessible to most people. Of course, you will want to go on fairly quickly and this book won't take you far, but it lifts the lid and gives your kids or you the first step you may need. Note that it doesn't cover the new BBC/Industry initiative for schools this September so you may want to hang on.

Reyna(27/07/2015)

Okay, children can follow it but don't seem to find it that captivating.

Lavona(05/07/2015)

I bought the book for my 12 year old son. He has found it interesting and has successfully enticed his curiosity to level 2: hands on. While we figure out the how to's I recommend the book to any one who is interested in understanding computer language.
