During Year 4, children read a greater variety of texts including persuasive texts, magazine excerpts and newspapers as well as stories from different cultures and historical texts. They also deepen their vocabulary and punctuation skills within their writing.
In maths, children develop their counting skills by learning to count in more complicated multiples (such as 7, 9, 25 and 1,000) and learn about place value in 4-digit numbers. They will also learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000 and become aware of negative numbers.
A big focus in Year 4 is fluency in times tables up to 12 × 12. At the end of Year 4, children have to sit an online Times Tables Check. The Times Tables Check is a formal, timed test involving 25 questions. Children can either pass or fail so preparation is vital!
As well as times tables, your child will learn basic division, perimeter, area, angles, symmetry and translation.
