The check asks children to read words aloud by sounding them out. This Year 1 pack builds that skill in short bursts, which suits a child of five or six. The phonics book follows the National Curriculum for ages 5-6, so the sounds match the ones school teaches.
Each of the three printed books holds 39 workouts, one for every week of the school year. That gives your child three ten-minute sessions a week, on one evening or spread over a few days. A workout opens with warm-up questions, then moves on to harder ones and a problem solving section. Answers and a progress chart sit at the back of each book.
The phonics book points straight at the check, with sentences to listen to and write and pictures to match. Alongside it, the English book covers spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension.
