Your Year 1 child sits the Phonics Screening Check in June, and these three workbooks cover the sounds it asks them to read.
The check asks children to sound out real words and made-up words on their own. This Year 1 phonics pack builds that skill sound by sound, in the order the Letters and Sounds programme teaches. Your child meets each new sound, practises it, then uses it in a short sentence. By June, the sounds on the check are ones they have already met on paper.
There are three printed workbooks of 48 pages each, with answers so you can mark a page in a minute. The activities are short, which suits a five or six year old at the end of a school day. Children write words into frames, circle the right picture and copy tricky words, as the sample pages show.
Each book takes the next step. The first teaches new sounds, the second shows how one letter can sound different ways, and the third shows how one sound can be spelled different ways. That last step is what the check tests most.
