Year 5 (Age 9-10) - 11+ Plus Exam

Year 5 is the third year of Key Stage 2 and children's knowledge will build on what was learned in previous years.

In Maths children will be expected to be confident with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will need to demonstrate using all four operations with larger numbers (three digits and then four digits). They should also be able to see how maths fits into everyday life, and other areas of study.

Children will continue to learn about fractions, decimals and percentages. They will need to calculate the area and perimeter of different shapes and need to solve measurement problems that involve converting between units of measurement. They will learn to draw and measure angles and also calculate the size of missing angles.

In English, children will continue to broaden their range of reading genres, use their skills of inference of characters' motives and feelings and begin understanding figurative language. They will also learn to spell a variety of more sophisticated words with different prefixes and suffixes.

When writing, children will need to select words carefully in order to demonstrate their full vocabulary. They will be expected to use brackets, dashes and commas correctly.
