About the RSL Creative Writing Workbook 1 (Ages 9-13)

Here are our top reasons to buy the RSL Creative Writing Workbook 1 (Ages 9-13):

  • Written for the writing tasks in the 11+ for grammar and independent school entry
  • Three chapters: Sandstorm descriptions, The Five Senses imagery and On The Mountain short story writing
  • Teaches dramatic sentences, elegant paragraphs and complete stories step by step
  • Grammar skills woven in, with example answers to compare against
  • A full-colour printed workbook for children in Years 5 to 8 (ages 9-13)

The 11+ asks your child to write something good in half an hour, and this workbook teaches them how.

Pupils analyse a sample answer, circle mistakes and suggest improvements using highlighters to develop critical writing

Writing is the part of the 11+ that parents can find hardest to help with. This RSL creative writing workbook takes your child through it in order, from single sentences to a finished story. It suits a child in Years 5 to 8 preparing for grammar or independent school entry, and it matches what the National Curriculum expects at the same age.

A creative writing task where pupils write a short story based on a mountain scene, using past tense and first person
Pupils write a short story based on a mountain scene, using past tense and first person, to build creative writing skills.

The three chapters are Sandstorm, The Five Senses and On The Mountain. Your child works through the exercises in this full-colour printed workbook, then compares their sensory descriptions with the example answers given. One page asks them to mark someone else's writing, circling mistakes and suggesting better choices.

Pupils write obvious and less obvious sensory descriptions for sentences, then compare their ideas to the example answers
Pupils write obvious and less obvious sensory descriptions for sentences, then compare their ideas to the example answers provided.

That habit of judging writing is what carries into the exam. Robert Lomax shows both strong models and instructive errors, so your child learns why a sentence works. By the final chapter they are writing a whole story in the past tense, in the first person.
