I purchased these books for my grandson as he has dyslexia and needed a bit of extra help keeping up with his class. They have been a huge help over the years.

About the Early Comprehension Workbook 1 (Ages 3-5)

Here are our top reasons to buy the Early Comprehension Workbook 1 (Ages 3-5):

  • Early reading comprehension for Pre-School and Reception children, ages 3-5
  • Covers story sequencing, what happens first, before and next, and how a story ends
  • Picture-based tasks plus reading captions, so a child works before they read fluently
  • Full answers included, and the skills feed into Key Stage 1 comprehension
  • Book 1 of the graded Early Comprehension series from Schofield and Sims

Your Pre-School or Reception child, ages 3-5, can follow a story long before they read one, and this workbook is where that starts.

Children number six picture pairs in the correct order to sequence a day out, then write a story
Children number six picture pairs in the correct order to sequence a day out, then write a story.

Comprehension begins with pictures, and the Early Comprehension Workbook 1 begins there too. Your child studies a set of pictures, works out the order of events and tells the story aloud. It matches the early reading work of nursery and Reception. A Year 1 child who still muddles the order of a story can use it as well.

Children count vehicles in a busy road scene and colour the correct number of squares for each type
Children count cars, coaches, lorries and minibuses in a road scene, then colour the correct number of squares for each.

In this printed workbook your child numbers pictures, reads short captions and says how a story ends. On the page headed "Tell the story", they put six picture pairs about a day out in order. Answers are included, so you can check together.

The front cover of Early Comprehension 1 features a large pink sailboat illustration and a space for the child to write
Early Comprehension 1 features a large pink sailboat illustration and a space for the child to write their name.

Because so much of the work is pictures and colouring, a child who cannot yet read still answers real questions. Some pages ask them to count things in a scene and colour squares to match. As Book 1 of a graded series, the steps stay small and lead towards Key Stage 1 comprehension.
