Snojen

better than any book found in the USA for a smart 4.5 year old. My son loves it and will not put it down

david

If your child needs extra help with understanding maths questions in various formats then this is the book for them. Both my children have benefitted from doing the quizzes and I have too!

Nicola

simply love these books !! they are set out well with no pictures or bright colours to distract for the task ahead, my little boy age 6 loves all of his schofield and Sims workbooks and actually asks if he can sit and work through them. His confidence in answering questions has grown and it's lovely to see that he's enjoying the extra work at home. would highly recommend these books to anyone.

A Great mental arithmetic book for young children which gives them practice in all the five key areas of maths

Michelle

This is a good series and allows a parent to know what the teachers are teaching. My daughter has really progressed. I bought the whole lot as it was very good value for money. These are very good books to improve mental arithmetic skills.

l bought this book to help my daughter in her day to day maths, this is just a spare copy.

I swear by these books. I have used them for over 12 years. My three children all have used them and have excelled with their Maths. I am now tutoring a friend's daughter who has gone from bottom set to 3rd of 7 in just over a year. Admittedly not sorely to do with me and these books. The biggest problem in schools today is they don't spend enough time on mental maths, so for your child to succeed and enjoy maths they need to be confident in mental maths. These books give lots of variety of questions and plenty of them. They will need your support, so show lots of patience and encouragement. There are two review tests in each book and these are great for measuring progress. You take and retake the tests at various stages throughout the book and this shows the child the rate of improvement. The book is simple and slightly old fashioned, but trust me it does work. Use it to find out where they are struggling and then focus on that area with lots of repetition.

I bought a whole host of these workbooks with the intention of helping my little eight year old home-educated relative meet Maths head on and show it absolutely no fear. The problems are very well presented. Each test starts off slowly and builds, considering it is still maths we're talking about, to quite an exciting crescendo. It is a real workout for the brain and each test is slightly more difficult than its predecessors. I discovered very early on that it was of no practical value to just leave my little colleague to go through the test under her own steam, as the sight of a whole page of maths is quite an intimidating one for her. And for me, let's be honest. However, by hiding the questions from her completely and simply reading each one to her, I have managed to eliminate all fear. It is much easier to phrase the questions logically too, just in case one of them should happen to make no sense to her whatsoever. The fact that you have to get the answer book separately is a very good thing. Anyone prepared to ask these questions of children ought to be able to live and die by the mathematical sword and work out their own answers as they do so. I think that's another reason why I have more success with the eight year old than her parents do, because I am (and always have been) utterly abject at maths. She appreciates the 'all in this together' approach, especially when I'm there trying to remember whether or not seventy one is in the two times table or something equally taxing. Truth be told, by the time we get to the end of each test I probably feel prouder of myself than I do of her. And she inevitably feels more superior than me in all matters mathematical, which makes it a whole lot easier to get her to do another test with me next time. Everyone's a winner.

Vanessa

this is a good book of mental arithmetic, one page a day, not too much for little ones to get bored but challenges them. puts adding etc in different contexts which will help them when it comes to KS2 maths

Bee

This book does what is says on the tin - focuses on mental arithmetic. Plenty of activities to work through. It is presented in column format meaning there are two columns per A4 page which is fine but takes a bit of getting used to. It is good for short bursts of mental arithmetic practice, but beware it does not contain any answers so if you don't want to pay more and buy the additional book with the answers in, you need to be confident of working out the answers yourself!
