About the KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack (Ages 7-11)

Mathematics is everywhere in life because it helps us solve problems.

It helps us decide what deal's best in the supermarket, it helps Apple illustrate which of their iPhones is the newest and we use it to select what size, price and often even style of clothing we buy. It cannot be understated just how important a strong, fundamental grasp of maths is.

“Mental Maths” is the fundamental mathematical skill. It's not just learning to get by without a calculator, it's an essential mathematical competency that's required if children are to do well at their 11+ exams, KS2 SATs tests and beyond.

Children need to be confident using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They need to learn how they're used with measures, shapes, money, time and space and how to use all of these parameters correctly to solve problems.

Introducing our KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack, 7x award winning Schofield and Sims workbooks that together with their separate answer booklets and teacher's guide offer an enormous amount of rewarding maths practice for children.

The set is aimed at children aged between 7 and 11, levels 3 to 6 (yes, you read correctly, up to level 6!). Each workbook is divided into three sections, each comprising of 12 one-page tests presented in a very easy-to-read layout.

KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack (Ages 7-11)

Book 1 aims to start at Level 3 with basic additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions before moving on to maths using “number vocabulary” (a common stumbling block). The final section presents questions as problems (a typical 11+ style).

Books 2 through to 6 offer progressively harder questions and by the time pupils are working through Book 6, many of the questions are at Level 6 standard. Tables, diagrams, charts, measures and graphs are used throughout the entire series of books.

Answers for all the questions are available within the included answer books. Indeed the pack actually contains an enormous 13x individual booklets!

Also included is the fantastic Teachers Guide, probably the most useful book of all. Within it are qualitative answers to help parents diagnose problem areas as well as a superb reference area and glossery.

The KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack contains an enormous amount of practice material. It's a staggeringly good set of books to help develop mathematical confidence for children aged between 7 and 11.

It may be quite expensive but Exam Ninja would rate the KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack as our best KS2 maths tool. It's an all-in-one workbook set for success at KS2 Maths, 11+ Maths and well into secondary school.

Just perfect ?

Fast delivery. Super happy with the service.

Who did you buy the KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack for and why? For my kids. for extra practise. Has it benefited them? Yes, they benefit from it and so do I because i don't have to spend days trawling the internet for practise worksheets. Would you recommend it? Definitely, as i have purchased these items separately before, but its economical to get the pack and the bonus is the teachers notes and guide, which is very useful in explaining topics which they may not have fully grasped.

Alan Whitaker

Who did you buy the KS2 Mental Maths Assault Pack for and why? My son, he's in year 4 and I thought he could do with some more practice at home. Has it benefited them? Yes. There were a few topics at school that he plain didn't understand. He used to guess the answer and it was only with these papers that it became apparent. There are some really helpful 'Diagnostic Tests' that are also included at the start of each booklet which are great. One thing I have to say is my word...this pack has got A LOT of questions in it. £50 is a lot for a few books but when all 13 come in a box...you realise how many there are!! Would you recommend it? Yes. Initially he rushed through it which was not the right way to do it. It's best I think for them to take their time and work through them alongside their school work and maybe a bit more here and there. I can see he'll be using it for the next few years. Yes, I said years because there are that many questions in it! Expensive but you don't get this detail and analysis in other books, especially when you buy them separately.

Very good book with answers in, good to use in conjunction with pupil workbook. Worth spending the money for the time it saves to calculate the answers yourself.

This is a book that my Year 3 son particularly likes. It gives a variety of Maths areas in each test and gradually increases the level of complexity. There is always something my son find interesting and challenging each time he does a test. He learns Maths skills and at the same time he has fun. Through the practice he has built a firm foundation for his school work. The book arrived on time.

Stacey

A good mental maths book and a great study aid for a child in KS2. The short maths papers are challenging and I would have liked answers at the back!

hayley

Just the right level for my daughter (year 3) to practice. Three different types of questions, word problems as well as simple number problems.

Olga

Easy and simple to use. All answers and questions for the accompanying student workbook. These books are an excellent tool to aid the progress of students in year 4, 5 and 6.

julia

Very pleased with the book. Like the way it is worded so the question is approached from different angles. Great way to get kids used to tricky questions. Will buy the other books available.

Gill

This book gave me an idea how to prepare the children to secondary school. Parents !! Please start from year 3.

This book is very good for the children who prefer for the grammer school and prepare at home. Please start Book 1 from year 3.

The Schofield & Sims Mental Arithmetic books are widely used in private schools and they have got to be by far the beat value workbooks available to parents whose children are preparing to sit their 11+. Each page has maths questions on everything from algebra to geometry. The sums are presented in simple equation form as well as the more wordy questions of the type found in SAT's. If by the beginning of Year 6 a child is confident with the level of sums in Book 5 he/she should be capable of performing well in the 11+ which usually take place in the first term of the academic year. It would be a good idea to buy the answer book to accompany Book 5 as it saves time in marking the tests. I found this workbook much more useful than the Bond test papers which are more expensive and require your child to sit a timed practice test whereas the Schofield and Sims books allow for more flexible study. Furthermore as each page covers all arithmetic principles , areas of weakness are easily highlighted. Most of the parents at my children's state school rely on this series and without exception rate it very highly.

david

If your child needs extra help with understanding maths questions in various formats then this is the book for them. Both my children have benefitted from doing the quizzes and I have too!

Ann

I bought a whole host of these workbooks with the intention of helping my little eight year old home-educated relative meet Maths head on and show it absolutely no fear. The problems are very well presented. Each test starts off slowly and builds, considering it is still maths we're talking about, to quite an exciting crescendo. It is a real workout for the brain and each test is slightly more difficult than its predecessors. I discovered very early on that it was of no practical value to just leave my little colleague to go through the test under her own steam, as the sight of a whole page of maths is quite an intimidating one for her. And for me, let's be honest. However, by hiding the questions from her completely and simply reading each one to her, I have managed to eliminate all fear. It is much easier to phrase the questions logically too, just in case one of them should happen to make no sense to her whatsoever. The fact that you have to get the answer book separately is a very good thing. Anyone prepared to ask these questions of children ought to be able to live and die by the mathematical sword and work out their own answers as they do so. I think that's another reason why I have more success with the eight year old than her parents do, because I am (and always have been) utterly abject at maths. She appreciates the 'all in this together' approach, especially when I'm there trying to remember whether or not seventy one is in the two times table or something equally taxing. Truth be told, by the time we get to the end of each test I probably feel prouder of myself than I do of her. And she inevitably feels more superior than me in all matters mathematical, which makes it a whole lot easier to get her to do another test with me next time. Everyone's a winner.

Nicholas

I am impressed by the style and content of this series of books. They are certainly useful for improving our daughter's arithmetic skills.

Nicola

simply love these books !! they are set out well with no pictures or bright colours to distract for the task ahead, my little boy age 6 loves all of his schofield and Sims workbooks and actually asks if he can sit and work through them. His confidence in answering questions has grown and it's lovely to see that he's enjoying the extra work at home. would highly recommend these books to anyone.

URNA

Having met my daughter's maths teacher who showed me this book to be the foundation of her teachings to all the children in Year 3 (7/8 year olds) I knew that this, together with Books 1,2,3,4 & 6, would be the ideal support for homework assistance. Until I bought this from Amazon, I had no guidelines at all and didn't know if the arithmetic I was 'teaching' at home was too hard, too easy or just plain useless. Now with this book I have the perfect assistant, because I know that the specific topics covered and the level of difficulty is exactly matched to what my daughter is studying at school, so it's an excellent revisionary tool, and it's even enjoyable too! Strongly recommended, I have no doubt that with regular use of this book at home my daughter, and her younger sister when her time comes, will have a much better chance of making the necessary grade in Year 6 and go on to our local grammar school. Sounds a bit over-the-top, but in its way, this little book can actually change the course of your children's lives - because the difference between our local grammar school and the comprehensive school is obvious for all to see. Getting a good grade at Arithmetic at age 11 is a fundamental requirement to being selected for a school offering better standards of education and in turn better opportunities in the future. I bought Books 1 through to 6 and I'm pleased I did.

Sireesha

l bought this book to help my daughter in her day to day maths, she has not started using this one yet but l looked thru and l can tell that it is good. Would recommend if you want to help you kids with their maths.

A very useful tool to get your child to do a little bit of maths everyday. Very good for Year 3 onwards.

A Great mental arithmetic book for young children which gives them practice in all the five key areas of maths

Michelle

This is a good series and allows a parent to know what the teachers are teaching. My daughter has really progressed. I bought the whole lot as it was very good value for money. These are very good books to improve mental arithmetic skills.

Celia

This series of books are an excellent resource for practice and revision of the National Numeracy Strategy Key stage 2 for Maths. They are designed to take up just the right about of time and input to provide students with regular revision of the key facts and strategies to keep their maths skills on target.

Rehmat

I have used these for years and find they are super for revision. They also pick up any topics that are not secure.

Great practise for covering work done in school. Easy layout and clear. Would recommend it for year 6 entrance tests.

jennifer

l bought this book to help my daughter in her day to day maths, this is just a spare copy.

Jan

I swear by these books. I have used them for over 12 years. My three children all have used them and have excelled with their Maths. I am now tutoring a friend's daughter who has gone from bottom set to 3rd of 7 in just over a year. Admittedly not sorely to do with me and these books. The biggest problem in schools today is they don't spend enough time on mental maths, so for your child to succeed and enjoy maths they need to be confident in mental maths. These books give lots of variety of questions and plenty of them. They will need your support, so show lots of patience and encouragement. There are two review tests in each book and these are great for measuring progress. You take and retake the tests at various stages throughout the book and this shows the child the rate of improvement. The book is simple and slightly old fashioned, but trust me it does work. Use it to find out where they are struggling and then focus on that area with lots of repetition.

sara

Helps me to help my daughter who is struggling with her Simms homework. Life saver. Reduces stress of supporting learning at home.

Brian

Excellent aid for practising mental mathematics. One page a day was sufficient to raise my child's mental maths scores. I highly recommend this publication.

saima

This series is great for providing your children with just a few minutes more maths each week. You can see how they are doing and where their weaknesses are. Even if you are not god at maths you can let your children get on with these and answers are included. Each test covers a double spread and contains three types of question. It helps the children well for coping with their SATS. My daughter has never been brilliant at maths but she thinks it's the best, most fun subject at school and I think that's because she is used to doing these exercises for fun at home. It helps with confidence.

Vanessa

this is a good book of mental arithmetic, one page a day, not too much for little ones to get bored but challenges them. puts adding etc in different contexts which will help them when it comes to KS2 maths

This has been an excellent source. My son works through the tests at school and was struggling understanding the terminology. Having the books has home has helped him gain confidence in understanding the terminology and been able to answer the questions confidently rather than guessing.

selina

An excellent series of books for stimulating the thought processes required for mental arithmetic/tables application - 10 minutes a day can make a real difference and the steady revision gives pupils confidence for numeracy lessons at school.

cathy

These books have been bought to help my son. They have been really good in that they give background support to his Maths studies and provide extra exercises when it comes to revision rather than making up our own.

Hashim Mirza

Very helpful for my grand daughter. The book arrived promptly and good condition

sara

I purchased this book in order to help develop my sons maths skills. Most days he will complete one of the 10 question sections which doesn't take long. I especially like the way that some of the questions are presented in word form which requires him to read the question carefully in order to answer it correctly. Excellent value for money but no answer section.

David

Bought this book for my child in Year 4. There are three sections of ten questions per test. Slightly different types of questions. Very good practice for her to use her mental maths skills not write everything down. Perfect for that age - some easier than others - we can work out weaknesses.

Bee

This book does what is says on the tin - focuses on mental arithmetic. Plenty of activities to work through. It is presented in column format meaning there are two columns per A4 page which is fine but takes a bit of getting used to. It is good for short bursts of mental arithmetic practice, but beware it does not contain any answers so if you don't want to pay more and buy the additional book with the answers in, you need to be confident of working out the answers yourself!

Gill

Use these books with my class every week. You have to buy a separate book for the answers though which is a major drawback.

Lisa

Good book to practice mathematical vocabulary and different ways to express sums. I have found the book useful with pupils I teach for extra maths. I found it useful to do the online assessment first to see which book to buy.
