This book is very good for the children who prefer for the grammer school and prepare at home. Please start Book 1 from year 3.

I bought a whole host of these workbooks with the intention of helping my little eight year old home-educated relative meet Maths head on and show it absolutely no fear. The problems are very well presented. Each test starts off slowly and builds, considering it is still maths we're talking about, to quite an exciting crescendo. It is a real workout for the brain and each test is slightly more difficult than its predecessors. I discovered very early on that it was of no practical value to just leave my little colleague to go through the test under her own steam, as the sight of a whole page of maths is quite an intimidating one for her. And for me, let's be honest. However, by hiding the questions from her completely and simply reading each one to her, I have managed to eliminate all fear. It is much easier to phrase the questions logically too, just in case one of them should happen to make no sense to her whatsoever. The fact that you have to get the answer book separately is a very good thing. Anyone prepared to ask these questions of children ought to be able to live and die by the mathematical sword and work out their own answers as they do so. I think that's another reason why I have more success with the eight year old than her parents do, because I am (and always have been) utterly abject at maths. She appreciates the 'all in this together' approach, especially when I'm there trying to remember whether or not seventy one is in the two times table or something equally taxing. Truth be told, by the time we get to the end of each test I probably feel prouder of myself than I do of her. And she inevitably feels more superior than me in all matters mathematical, which makes it a whole lot easier to get her to do another test with me next time. Everyone's a winner.

Having met my daughter's maths teacher who showed me this book to be the foundation of her teachings to all the children in Year 3 (7/8 year olds) I knew that this, together with Books 1,3,4,5 & 6, would be the ideal support for homework assistance. Until I bought this from Amazon, I had no guidelines at all and didn't know if the arithmetic I was 'teaching' at home was too hard, too easy or just plain useless. Now with this book I have the perfect assistant, because I know that the specific topics covered and the level of difficulty is exactly matched to what my daughter is studying at school, so it's an excellent revisionary tool, and it's even enjoyable too! Strongly recommended, I have no doubt that with regular use of this book at home my daughter, and her younger sister when her time comes, will have a much better chance of making the necessary grade in Year 6 and go on to our local grammar school. Sounds a bit over-the-top, but in its way, this little book can actually change the course of your children's lives - because the difference between our local grammar school and the comprehensive school is obvious for all to see. Getting a good grade at Arithmetic at age 11 is a fundamental requirement to being selected for a school offering better standards of education and in turn better opportunities in the future. I bought Books 1 through to 6 and I'm pleased I did.
